Okta helps companies manage all of their cloud applications. They liked it because it was a short and powerful word. Plus when you find an available four-letter URL that actually has something to do with what your company does, you take it.

Strategy
“It’s tough to separate yourself from the competition. And it’s even tougher when you’re in cloud computing.”
— Freddy Kerrest, President, Okta.
The word ‘cloud’ was simply too ubiquitous to be in the name. We didn’t want to be playing the same notes that everyone else was. And we also wanted a name that had some strength to it. The name we decided on came from our work in aviation. Okta is a meteorological term: it’s how pilots measure cloud cover. One Okta is equal to one-eighth of the sky.
Approach
We worked directly with the two founders, Todd McKinnon and Frederic Kerrest. They both had a lot to do with the success of Salesforce.com. They called us at 10 in the morning, we met with them at 2pm and we had a deal by 6. Our kind of guys.
