Product positioning at its best: AMD reveals new brand name for its latest processor.

SUNNYVALE, CA, Apr. 25, 2002. We told you on that AMD had filed a bunch of tradmark applications of possible names for its new processor. Yesterday they announced the winner: Opteron.

Opteron - because it's "optimal," "optimum" and "gives you the option." If this processor is the optimum one, no telling yet what the next generation will be. "Postopteron"? "Opteron Ultra"? "Betteron"? "Preposteron"?
