Creativity is the paint that gives our world its color. If there were no creativity, we would all wear the same clothes, eat the same foods, live in the same square houses and eat the same vanilla ice cream. Yes, creativity gives us a reason to get up in the morning, but you may have noticed that creative types don’t always play well with one another. If you’re trying to thrive in a creative group, how do you actually keep it all together and ensure the best results?

  1. Don’t question my genius!

Why is it so difficult for creative types to collaborate productively? The simple answer is that most creatives are pretty certain of their own unflappable genius, and they don’t want others stomping on their creative process. If you bring together 4 or 5 people who all have their own brilliant but contradictory ideas, things can get pretty ugly on the whiteboard.

  1. Let’s get creative!

A Hundred Monkeys isn’t your average creative group. People rely on us to come up with names that will set the tone for multi-million-dollar—and sometimes multi-billion-dollar—businesses. Obviously, we can’t afford to let our egos get in the way of our process. There is just way too much at stake. So over the years, we have perfected our own strategies for remaining creative while keeping the productivity at peak performance.

  1. Creative group dynamics

If you want to thrive in a creative group, it’s all about process. In other words, don’t just wing it. Creative people may hate boundaries, but when it comes to group dynamics, it’s important to keep everyone on the same page. Define your process in clear terms, set the ground rules, establish a clear-cut approach, and be unified on the ultimate goal. As long as you can keep your eye on the big picture, and as long as you’re all striving toward the same end, you won’t get bogged down by bureaucracy or egomania.

  1. Other tips

Most importantly, remember that you’re not the only game in town. Your collaborators have a lot to bring to the table, and being part of a creative group means that you’re going to have to make compromises. It’s not about you. It’s about the end goal. As long as you—and all of your creative cohorts—keep that goal at the forefront of everything you do, you’re going to make some real magic.

  1. Need a creative group?
