Getting to a great name takes a lot more than throwing a bunch of words on the wall and voting on favorites. It takes a keen understanding of audience, personality and point of view. It takes iteration and careful screening. It takes getting everyone on the same page. What’s the common thread through our names? They have stories behind them. They tend towards real words and phrases. They get a reaction. They don’t try to say everything at once. Sure, it might be a little easier to find a URL with a word that’s misspelled or invented but it’s at the cost of something people will be able to remember and find. Remember, if your name is “Rotr,” your name is actually “Rotor without the second O.” Considering over 95% of site visits come from search instead of direct navigation, pure dot com URLs are becoming less important every day.
