Cookin'

Nature of the Work:
Name and Logo for a Retail Home Electronics Chain

Naming Consultant:
Altman & Manley

Steve Longo ran the Tweeter, etc. stores in New Hampshire and when he broke off with Tweeter, a big New England outfit, he needed to find a new name for his part of the chain, which carried high-end consumer electronics. We thought that Tweeter was a really cool name and we knew it was going to be hard to come up with something that strong. Steve was a great client and he wanted to capture the raw musical energy that his customers were really after. We finally settled on Cookin¹ because that is what musicians do when everything is happening just right.

Sun, Moon & Stars

Nature of the Work:
New Name for an ATM Program

Naming Consultant:
Altman & Manley

Jim Keegan was the CEO of Cambridgeport Bank, a community bank headquartered in Cambridge, MA. Jim was an old guy with a great laugh and we were a bunch of young iconoclasts, but we really hit it off and did some great work together over a number of years. They had four offices and were up against the prototypical big banks who didn¹t really know their customers. At Altman & Manley, we did their logo, advertising, collateral, in-bank displays and this wonderful little project, which was to come up with a name and identity for their ATMs, which we all know used to have brilliant names like Bank 24. Well the name we chose came from a wonderful illustration by Ivan Chermayeff. It was a powerful image of the sun next to the moon and a star. And we bought the rights from Ivan to use his illustration on the machines and the ATM card, which was definitely the coolest thing in your wallet.
