Codex
Language to code
- Naming
Codex is a model built by OpenAI that translates natural language to code. The name Codex contains both a clear connection to code and a narrative tie to the history of recorded knowledge and human progress.

What we did
With the timing for the launch of Codex already decided by the time we started the project, this one was a race against the clock. But before we could name this product, we first had to build a naming architecture that could work across their portfolio of current and future offerings. We then developed two rounds of names with our recommended architecture in mind, with the goal of giving this model a name that could serve as a transition to a more intuitive naming system. Codex fit the bill.
What was the deal with…
Trademark
All names were put through a preliminary legal screening, though trademark registration was not the critical deciding factor.
URL
As a product, Codex lives within the OpenAI brand. It didn’t need its own domain name, so URL was not a factor: chatgpt.com/codex
The decision
While there were a handful of names that resonated with the core team, Codex rose to the top in the very first presentation. This was a team that made decisions quickly.
