Fine Mess is equal parts bakery and community cornerstone. Located on Lopez Island, one of the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest, the space provides home-style baked goods and a reason to come together, for locals and seasonal visitors alike. The name Fine Mess speaks to the contrasts that make it worth visiting: rusticity meets elegance, tidiness meets abundance, island mentality meets ferry.
What we did
We worked with Margot Case, the owner and a baker herself, as she took the reins of this Lopez institution (previously known as Holly B’s). The transition brought questions of how to honor Holly B’s and take root as a new community establishment. Our inspiration was wide in scope — from local flora & fauna to stories of personal growth. In the end, Fine Mess felt most authentic to the spirit of the new space and the people behind it.

“Fine Mess is the vibe we’ve been cultivating — fun and delicious, made with care but also relaxed. The story I like to tell is that baking is a mess of fine things — flour, sugar, salt, yeast. Some days are also an actual mess, but it’s a bakery. I think this might be normal?”

Names were preliminarily screened against the Washington Secretary of State public filings.

The decision
After one round of naming, Margot faced a handful of strong favorites. Socializing them with a small group of relatives and locals built buy-in for the final name.
